VHF Radio Procedural Words And Phrases

Maritime Radio Phrases & Radio Lingo


 Due to practicality there are no set and precise words to use while on a marine radio however the phrases below should be used wherever possible.
 

Acknowledge Asking the other party to confirm they have received and understand the current message.
Affirmative To grant permission or YES
Break Indicating a separation between parts of the message. You may use this to draw a clear distinction between text and another portion of the message.
Channel You may use this in a sentence.... (Change to channel __ before proceeding)
Confirm Did you understand or is that correct.
Correction  
Go Ahead Telling the person on the other end to proceed with their message.
How Do You Read Asking the person on the other end to confirm how well they are receiving your signal or message.
I Say Again To be used in place of "I Repeat"
Mayday The spoken word you would use to indicate that you where in distress
Negative Indicating to someone that 1-That is not correct 2-You do not agree 3-NO
Over You have ended your transmission and now expect a response from the other person
Out You are finished your conversation with that person and do not require a response.
Pan Pan The spoken word you would use to let others know your message is urgent
Prudonce While a long distress situation is taking place this indicates that communication can resume however on a restricted basis. Examples of restricted communication would be ships business or any messages of a higher priority.
Read Back Asking the person on the other end to repeat all of the message back to you exactly as it was said in the last transmissions once you have said the word over. You should avoid using the word "repeat".
Roger Indicating that you received and understood the last message
Roger Number Indicating that you received and understood the last message with numbers
Stand By Letting the person on the other end know that you will be pausing for a few seconds or minutes.
Say Again Asking the person on the other end to repeat
Securite The spoken word used for the safety signal, (French for Security)
Seelonce Letting others know that they should remain silence on this channel due to a distress situation. (French for Silence)
Seelonce Distress Letting others know that a distress situation is currently in progress. Comes from a source other then the vessel in distress. (French for Silence Distress)
Seelonce Feenee Letting others know that a distress situation has now ended. (French for Silence Over)
Seelonce Mayday Letting others know that there is a distress situation in progress. Comes from the ship in distress. (French for Silence Mayday)

Verify Asking the other person transmitting to check their coding & text and send correct version.
Wilco Instructions have been received, are understood and will be complied with.
Words Twice Can be used in two ways. 1-Indicating that communication is difficult and asking that each word be sent twice. 2-Letting the other person know that communication is difficult and you will be sending each word twice.
