Who Owns The Beer Stores in Ontario
Contrary to what most Ontario residents think (60-70%), the Beer Store is
privately run by three large brewers.
The history of The Beer Store stems back to 1927 when after prohibition
ended the Brewers Warehousing Company Limited was set-up as co-operative
which at the time was owned by hundred's of small brewers.
At first the small brewers only worked together to store and ship their
products to stores that where privately owned however in 1940 the brewers
decided to get together and buy out the contracts from these stores. The
newly purchased stores then had their names collectively changed to "Brewers
Retail Inc" or more commonly know as "The Beer Store".
After years of consolidations The Beer Store is now owned by Labatt (49%),
Sleeman (2%) and Molson Coors (49%) all of which are foreign owned
companies.
